AN INTERVIEW ABOUT THE MOST RELIABLE NGO IN TOWN

SpoonbillNest, a name you might have heard circling since last December. It started with the first annual conference SpoonbillNest back in 2019, and in partnership with Elite Academy, it inspired the SpoonbillNest Innovation Center. But what exactly is this center?
It is the newest NGO in the city of Elbasan and the only one of its kind. The main focus will be on vocational education, training, and society building. To understand a little bit more about this new NGO, continue reading this short interview with Terena Cardwell, Project Manager.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOUT TO COME TO ALBANIA AND WORK FOR SPOONBILLNEST INNOVATION CENTER?

This year has been challenging for everyone. I was let go from my position in Los Angeles due to massive layoffs. After that, I was forced to look outside the box for my next challenges. So, I found Elite Travel Group. After speaking with Elvis Kotherja, and the board of directors of SpoonbillNest Innovation Center, I decided to take a big chance for the opportunity to experience a new culture and affect real and impactful change in this community.

HOW DOES SPOONBILLNEST INNOVATION CENTER PLAN TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN ELBASAN?

SpoonbillNest is engaging with local schools, particularly VET schools, and the University of Elbasan. We want to provide curriculum development support and teacher training opportunities. We have already initiated a project to create green energy and sustainable agriculture curricula through a partnership between Mihal Shahini and Solar Green Education (Spain). In addition, we have also initiated the conversation to bring the Oracle Academy curricula into the education system in Elbasan, starting with the University.

HOW CAN A BUSINESS AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS BECOME PARTNERS OF THIS NGO?

Businesses looking to improve the quality and qualifications of candidates, through specific training and internship opportunities should reach out to us. Likewise, educational institutions that are willing and able to update their curricula, upskill their teachers, and/or implement afterschool programs should contact us. As a result, we can work together to improve their academic offerings.

HOW CAN THE YOUTH OF ELBASAN BECOME PART OF THIS CENTER ?

Youth can reach out directly. We have a youth council and a green team that is always welcoming new members and volunteers. Also, those interested in taking courses for personal and professional development should check out Elite Academy.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CURRENT GOALS FOR THIS NGO?

Our first goal is to create projects that will improve the educational and employment opportunities for the youth of Elbasan. Secondly, we want to engage in society-building activities that improve inclusion for all segments of the community. In addition to the projects already mentioned, we have applied for grants to train youth for careers in digitalization and tourism. Also, by collaborating with active-adventure tourism providers, there will be possibilities for student programs in sports & outdoor activities.
